XP Deus metaaldetector

Canadese Deus fan:

Zijn eerste reactie: Good day.  I thought it was interesting that you are such a celebrity in Holland that you even have a detector with your name on it.  Congratulations.  I will certainly send you some info on my experiences here in Canada.  So far the Deus has surpassed my expectations.  Do you want pictures of my finds or the areas I have hunted?  Get back to me when you can.  I know how difficult it must be for you what with the paparazzi and all.  Best wishes.  Wayne.

Hello Wayne,

Ha, ha, you are funny Wayne, paparazzi aren't  waiting for me. Writing some books about detecting didn't make me a celebrity here. Only detectorists know me here. About your question about Garrett, we don't sell Garrett here, only Tesoro, XP, Minelab and White's.

Best regards,
Gert Gesink

Opening the Box.  – When I first received my machine and opened the box I thought “wow what alot of packaging.  Everything was individually wrapped in plastic, or came on a zip lock bag.  It seemed a bit much, but I guess with all the high tech stuff in there you wouldn’t want to get moisture damage. I thought the machine was easy to assemble and the instructions were straight forward and easy to read and understand. I was happy to receive with the machine one of the emergency chargers as well as the car charger as it was my impression that these were optional accessories.  I also received an extra recharger cord and coil nut and bolt.  I don’t know if these were supposed to come with the kit, but it was a nice surprise to get something extra.

Since getting the Deus I have had an opportunity to compare it to two other high end detectors which I own, the Minelab E-Trac and the White’s V3.  I have found that each machine has its distinct advantages over the other.  For example, The V3 is great for parks and sports fields especially in discriminating out gold rings from pull tabs.  I have found, however, that the depth is not as great as the other two machines. Also the wireless headphones tend to go through batteries quicker than I would like, and they are rather bulky. The weight of this machine is not too bad, but still on the heavy side. The Minelab has great depth, and is the best of the three at discriminating out bottle caps, but is heavy and I can usually only swing it for two to three hours max, before fatigue sets in.

The Deus on the other hand is feather light.  When I first got it I thought “This is way too light to be a serious machine.  So I took it out to a few sites that I had pounded with the E-Trac just to see if I could pull out a few more keepers.  At the three sites that I had previously meticulously combed over (or so I thought) with the E-Trac I made finds in areas that I know I had gone over. This was very impressive, because I was so certain there could be absolutely nothing left to find.  This left me shaking my head in amazement.  I have since used the machine at a detecting club rally and found an old Canadian quarter in a wooded area that I probably would not have gone into with another detector.  With its wireless setup I was cruising through the woods without being caught up in the branches.  No doubt about it, this is a bushwacking machine.  I also found that while other detectorists were tiring out from swinging their machines, when I returned to my car at the end of the hunt I was still fresh as a daisy.  I like the ability of the machine to be able to switch to different modes at the press of a button.  I also like that you don’t have to mess with the settings at all when you start out.  They are very stable and accurate right out of the box. There’s not too much I would change about the machine, although I found the pinpoint a pain.  It would be way better if you pushed the pinpoint button for both pinpoint on and pinpoint off.  I found pressing the return button was distracting and clumsy to turn the pinpoint off.  I did find that when pinpointing you could get a rough idea of the depth of the object by watching how closed or open the frame got when centering it on the object. The headphones, I found, worked very well and were comfortable, though did take some time to get used to because I, like most detectorists are used to heavier bulkier phones.  After a while though, it was like they weren’t even there. All in all I am extremely pleased with the Deus.  It was all it was reported to be and more.  It has become my overall favourite of the three detectors I own and is most likely the one I would keep if I had to get rid of any.  I will undoubtedly use this machine for travelling and look forward to many rewarding outings using it.  I am waiting patiently for a larger coil to come out so I can cover more ground, but if this is like the Deus it will be worth the wait.

Antwoord Gert:

Thanks for your story about the Deus. What might interest readers is what you found (pictures) and what kind of settings you used on the Deus and why. For the rest it is a nice report, so I will use it and translate the text into Dutch for the readers. Thanks a lot!

Attaching some pictures of finds.  I have mostly used the Deus Fast and G-Maxx Power with no changes to the programs. They are really great the way they are.  Norfolk Wolf recommends not messing with them for a good long while in order to really get to know the machine.  Also apparently they tested the machine for a good six months prior to its release.  I find the settings working great here in Alberta and so far have not had to change a thing.
