Groundtech GR-4 DUAL: discover more with 3D ground scanning and PI metal detection
Looking for gold, silver, historical objects or larger buried metal targets? The Groundtech GR-4 DUAL puts two search methods within reach. This comprehensive version combines a 3D ground scanner with an integrated pulse induction metal detector in one modular device.
Explore your search site with the dual scanning sensor, view measurement results on the colour display and switch to the included PiD35 search coil to search directly for metal targets. A versatile combination for searchers who want to investigate their site in greater detail.
Search for gold, silver and other metals
The PI metal detector lets you search for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including gold, silver, copper, bronze, iron and steel. Examples include jewellery, historical metal objects, tools, components and larger buried objects.
This makes the GR-4 DUAL interesting for a range of search objectives. Want to investigate a historical site, locate larger metal targets or explore different types of terrain during a search trip? The combination of scanning and metal detection allows you to adapt your approach to the location.
For adventurous searchers with a plan
An old map, a local account or previous finds can be the start of a rewarding search. The GR-4 DUAL helps you combine those clues with measurements taken in the field.
- Militaria enthusiasts: search for metal components, equipment items and larger buried iron and steel objects at historical locations.
- Searchers looking for precious-metal objects: use the PI search coil for metal targets, including gold and silver objects.
- Searchers interested in archaeology: compare ground measurements with historical information, landscape features and previous finds.
- Searchers travelling abroad: take one modular system for different investigation methods and search conditions.
- Experienced detectorists: expand your approach with ground scanning, visual analysis and PI metal detection.
Always search with permission and in accordance with local regulations.
Two complementary technologies
3D ground scanning: visualise areas of interest
The MFS-2 dual sensor measures magnetic differences underground. These may be associated with buried ferrous objects and changes in the ground. By scanning systematically, you create a visual representation of the measurements and examine which areas stand out.
Groundtech also describes this scanning function for investigating anomalies that may indicate underground structures and voids, such as chambers and tunnels. Repeating scans and taking measurements from different directions allows you to investigate areas of interest further.
PI metal detection: search directly with the PiD35 coil
Swap the sensor module for the included PiD35 search coil and use the GR-4 DUAL as a PI metal detector. This allows you to search for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
You use the same main unit for both methods. This saves carrying a second separate device and gives you more options during a search session.
A versatile choice for different ground conditions
The integrated PI system operates at a stated pulse frequency of 1 kHz. Groundtech positions this technology for deep searching and use in conditions including mineralised and saline soils.
Do you search at different locations or take your equipment on trips? The DUAL offers the flexibility to take ground measurements and search for metal with a coil.
From exploring a site to detailed analysis
The GR-4 DUAL offers different functions for each stage of your investigation:
- 3D Ground Scanning: scan a defined area for a three-dimensional representation of differences in measurements.
- Live Scanning: view changes while exploring your search location.
- Pinpointer mode: investigate a measured anomaly more closely at a particular spot. This is a device function, not a separate handheld pinpointer.
- Detector Fast Scanning: search for metal targets using the PI search coil.
- Detector Advanced Scanning: use additional detector settings to fine-tune your approach.
Immediate viewing on the built-in colour display
In the field, you want to see what your measurements reveal without delay. The GR-4 DUAL therefore has a built-in colour display for settings and measurement results. You can work independently without needing a smartphone or tablet for every measurement.
Scan, review results and decide where to search next: it all starts on the device itself.
G-Portal: get more from your scan results
For more detailed analysis, connect the GR-4 DUAL via Bluetooth to the G-Portal app for Android and iOS. Save your scans, view 3D and 4D visualisations and generate reports from your measurements.
This is useful when you visit a location more than once. Review previous results, compare scans and prepare your next search session using the data you have already collected.
Deep searching: what range does Groundtech state?
Groundtech states the following maximum ranges for the GR-4 DUAL:
- 3D ground scanning: up to 15 metres.
- PI metal detection: up to 3 metres.
These are manufacturer-stated maximum figures under suitable conditions. Actual range depends on target size, properties and position, the ground and the function used. The greatest depths relate to suitable, larger targets, not small coins or gold particles.
Compact to carry, flexible to use
The foldable, modular construction makes the GR-4 DUAL practical to transport. The adjustable grip angle and interchangeable sensor or search coil allow you to adapt the device to your investigation method.
According to Groundtech, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 10 hours of ground scanning or 6 hours of PI metal detection, depending on usage. Charging is via USB-C.

GR-4 or GR-4 DUAL?
Want to use ground scanning only? The standard GR-4 is an option. Want to search for gold, silver and other metals with a PI coil as well? Choose the GR-4 DUAL. This version gives you the most comprehensive options within the GR-4 series.
Good to know
The magnetic scanning sensor and PI search coil have different roles: use the PI function to search for gold and other non-ferrous metals. A scan image shows differences in measurements, and a metal signal does not automatically identify a particular metal. Careful measurements and familiarity with your equipment help you get the best from both systems.
Give your next search more possibilities
Choose the Groundtech GR-4 DUAL if you want to combine ground scanning and metal detection in one system. Investigate areas of interest, analyse your scans and continue your search with the PI coil.
