What can you investigate with the GR-4?
The GR-4 uses MFS-2 Dual Sensor technology: a dual magnetic sensor configured as a gradiometer. It measures differences that may be associated with buried ferrous objects and changes in the ground.
Examples include larger iron and steel objects, buried tools, metal components and steel containers. You investigate where measurable anomalies occur and which areas you want to examine more closely.
Groundtech also describes investigating anomalies that may indicate underground structures and voids, such as chambers and tunnels. By scanning an area systematically and comparing measurements, you collect additional information about your search site.

3D Ground Scanning: visualise a search area
With 3D Ground Scanning, you collect measurements across a defined area. The data is used to create a three-dimensional representation in which you can examine differences within the scanned site. Ideal when you want to investigate a location systematically and compare scans.
Live Scanning: view changes while exploring
The Live Scanning function displays changes in measurements as you scan. This allows you to explore a site and decide which areas you want to investigate more thoroughly with a 3D scan.
Pinpointer mode: investigate an anomaly more closely
Pinpointer mode lets you examine a measured anomaly more closely at a particular spot. This function is part of the GR-4 and is not a separate handheld pinpointer supplied with the device.
Immediate viewing on the built-in colour display
The GR-4 has a built-in colour display for viewing settings and measurement results directly. This means you do not need a phone or tablet for every measurement.
It makes the device practical in the field: scan, review results and decide where to take further measurements. You can work independently and use the app when you want to carry out more detailed analysis.
Save and compare your scans with G-Portal
Connect the GR-4 to the G-Portal app for Android and iOS using Bluetooth 4.2 BLE. You can save scan data, view 3D and 4D visualisations and generate reports.
Do you visit a location more than once? You can review earlier measurements and compare different scans. This lets you use information from previous search sessions in your next investigation.
How deep can the Groundtech GR-4 scan?
Groundtech states a maximum scanning depth of up to 15 metres for the 3D scanning system. This is a manufacturer-stated maximum under suitable conditions.
Actual range depends on factors including target size and properties, ground structure and the scanning function used. The greatest depths relate to suitable, larger targets and are not a fixed detection depth for every object.
Compact to carry, comfortable to use
The foldable, modular construction, adjustable grip angle and removable sensor module make the GR-4 practical to transport and use on location.
According to Groundtech, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 10 hours of ground scanning, depending on usage. Charging is via USB-C.

Good to know
A scan image is a visualisation of measurement data, not a photograph of what lies underground or an automatic identification of an object. The magnetic sensor does not directly detect gold, silver or copper. Careful scanning, repeat measurements and knowledge of the location help you interpret the results.
