XP DEUS II vs XP ICON X: Which Metal Detector Is Right for You?
The XP DEUS II and XP ICON X both use XP's modern FMF multi-frequency technology, operate wirelessly and are among the most interesting detectors in the current XP range.
However, they are not simply two similar detectors with a different price tag.
The XP ICON X is designed for detectorists who want powerful FMF technology combined with low weight and straightforward controls. The XP DEUS II goes considerably further and offers far more settings, programs and options to fine-tune the detector to your own detecting style.
But do you actually need those extra possibilities? In this comparison, we explain the main differences.

What do XP ICON X and DEUS II have in common?
The main similarity is XP FMF – Fast Multi Frequency.
With FMF, the detector operates with multiple frequencies simultaneously. This allows it to detect a wide range of targets and perform effectively in very different conditions.
Both systems are suitable for:
- fields;
- pasture;
- woodland;
- iron-contaminated sites;
- dry beaches;
- wet salt beaches;
- water detecting within the maximum rated depth of the relevant model.
The biggest difference: simplicity versus maximum control
This is probably the most important question when choosing between these two detectors.
The XP ICON X offers plenty of capability while keeping the controls clear and easy to understand. You do not need to master dozens of settings before you can start detecting effectively.
The XP DEUS II gives experienced users much more control over programs, audio, frequencies, discrimination, reactivity and other detector settings.
That does not automatically mean the DEUS II is the better choice for every detectorist.
If you rarely use advanced settings, the simpler interface of the ICON X may actually be more enjoyable.
When should you choose the XP ICON X?
Choose ICON X if…
The ICON X is particularly interesting if you:
- Want a lightweight wireless XP metal detector
- Want to use FMF multi-frequency
- Do not want to work with very extensive settings all the time
- Want a detector that is quick to understand
- Want to detect on land and at the beach
- Want a system that fits within the XP FMF ecosystem
- Want to spend less than on a complete DEUS II setup.

When should you choose the XP DEUS II?
Choose DEUS II if…
The DEUS II becomes particularly interesting if you:
- Want to configure the detector in great detail
- Detect on many different types of terrain
- Like to create and adjust your own programs
- Want extensive control over the audio
- Want access to many single frequencies

Is the XP ICON X less powerful than the DEUS II?
A detector with simpler controls is not automatically a weak detector.
The ICON X also uses XP FMF technology and shares important parts of the XP ecosystem with the DEUS II.
The main difference is how much control and adjustment you have as the user.
DEUS II is the more advanced platform. ICON X focuses on a strong balance between performance, ease of use and price.
Which one is easier for beginners?
For someone with relatively little metal detecting experience, the ICON X is generally quicker to understand.
You still get modern FMF technology, but with fewer advanced settings to deal with than on the DEUS II.
That does not mean a beginner cannot use a DEUS II. Thanks to its factory programs, you can also start detecting immediately with the DEUS II.
The difference becomes more noticeable when you want to dive deeper into custom settings later on.
Which is more interesting for experienced detectorists?
That does not depend entirely on experience.
An experienced detectorist who likes to fine-tune programs in detail will probably appreciate the extra possibilities of the DEUS II.
However, there are also experienced detectorists who prefer a very light detector that allows them to start detecting quickly without constantly adjusting settings. For that type of user, the ICON X can be especially attractive.
XP ICON X vs DEUS II on the beach
Both detectors use FMF technology and can therefore be used effectively on beaches and wet salt sand.
For detectorists who mainly search along the waterline or in shallow water, the ICON X offers plenty of capability.
If you want to dive deeper, the DEUS II has a clear advantage: with the correct underwater configuration, the DEUS II system can be used to 20 metres, compared with 5 metres for the ICON X.
XP ICON X vs DEUS II on iron-contaminated fields
On sites with a lot of iron and multiple targets close together, search coil choice, reactivity and detector settings can make a big difference.
Both systems can perform well in these conditions. However, DEUS II gives an experienced user more options to fine-tune the detector for difficult ground.
If you prefer using a good preset program without adjusting every setting individually, the ICON X is more straightforward.
Can you use the same XP search coils?
One major advantage of the current XP FMF family is compatibility within the ecosystem.
ICON X is compatible with several FMF search coils from the DEUS II ecosystem, including:
- 22.5 cm FMF
- 28 cm FMF
- 34 x 28 cm FMF
- 24 x 13 cm HF2 FMF
This is particularly useful if you already own XP equipment or want to expand your setup later.

Which search coil should you choose?
On both detector platforms, the search coil has a major influence on how the detector feels and which types of sites it is best suited to.
- 22 cm: compact and useful on heavily contaminated sites.
- 28 cm: popular all-round choice.
- 34 x 28 cm: more ground coverage on larger and more open sites.
- HF2 24 x 13 cm: interesting for small targets and more specialised detecting.
What about the headphones?
XP offers an extensive wireless ecosystem with several headphone options.
Depending on the configuration, you can use compact wireless headphones or larger over-ear models.
This allows you to customise not only the detector itself, but also the comfort of your setup.
Price difference: do you need the DEUS II?
For many detectorists, this is probably the most important question.
The DEUS II costs more, but in return you get XP's most advanced detector platform with significantly more options for fine-tuning.
The ICON X is particularly interesting if your thinking is:
“I want modern XP FMF performance, but I do not need to adjust every individual parameter myself.”
In that case, the price difference between the two systems may matter more than the additional functions of the DEUS II.
